Freight Yard

Every crate starts on the wrong truck. Nothing in the yard turns, so the only way a crate reaches its own livery is by being tilted from one flatbed to the next, and the only way it leaves is through the gate at the end of that truck's lane.

How to play
  1. Each truck drives forwards and backwards along the lane it starts in. Nothing turns, and nothing changes lane.
  2. Behind every cab is a flatbed. One crate rides a flatbed at a time.
  3. A crate can be tilted from one flatbed to another whenever the two beds sit side by side and the receiving bed is empty.
  4. A truck leaves through the gate at the end of its own lane, and only while it is carrying a crate painted its colour.
  5. A truck that has left is gone. Send one away too early and the lane it was blocking may be the one you still needed.
  6. The challenge is over when every crate has left the yard. The small number on each tab is the fewest moves it can be done in.
Questions

Do I have to match the number printed on the challenge?

No. It is the fewest possible moves, worked out by solving the challenge before it shipped, so it is a target rather than a pass mark. Finishing is the win; finishing at that number is the brag.

Can I get stuck?

Yes, and that is half the game. Drive a truck out too early, or park one across a lane you still need, and the crates left behind have nowhere to go. Undo steps back one move at a time, and restart deals the same challenge again.

What does the hint actually do?

It plays the next move of a shortest solution from wherever you are, and it costs a move like any other. When nothing it can play leads anywhere, it says so, which is how you find out you have painted yourself into a corner.
